1800 Silkwork Firescreen Sampler by Sarah Stainton

George III, dated 1800. 22.75ins by 18.5ins wide. 1800 Silkwork Firescreen Sampler by Sarah Stainton. Framed in an old, possibly original, mahogany firescreen frame with gilt slip and glass.

Tacked to wood with brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye.

Meandering floral border.

Colours gold, cream, green, navy blue, pale blue, dark brown, pink, light brown and olive green.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case, numbers 1-4, and family initials 'G R'.

Verses read

'Lord give me wisdom to direct my ways

I beg not Riches nor yet Length of days

My Life s A span the time it hath to last

Mixt with toil and shoke with every blast.'

Verse entitled 'Spring' reads

'Child of the summer charming rose No longer

in confinement lie Arise to light thy form

disclose Rival the spangles of the sky The

rains are gone the storms are oer Winter

retrats (sic) to make the way Come then thou

sweetly blushing flower Come lovely

stranger come away'.

Verse entitled 'Of Christmas' reads

'AT the Nativity of Christ> our Lord The Angels did

rejoice with one Accord

Let Christmas imitate them

here on Earth And keep

this Feast with joy and

civil Mirth'.

Verse entitled 'Of Easter' reads

'The Holy Feast of Easter

was injoind to bring Christ

Resurrection to our Mind

Rise then from sin as

he did from the Grave

That by his Merits he

your souls may save'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a lion and unicorn (represents the Royal coat of arms),

birds,

peacocks,

swans,

flowers,

potted flowering plants,

trees,

crowns,

diamonds,

a lion,

horse,

a house surrounded by fir trees and birds, with a gentleman and dog on one side, and a lady holding a flower on the other side,

butterflies

and a windmill.

CONDITION: Good. No holes.

No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.

No stitch losses.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

Colour run around some of the green threads.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
