1757 Silkwork Sampler by Marie Areton

George III, dated 1757. 16.5ins by 10.5ins wide. 1757 Silkwork Sampler by Marie Areton. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Tacked to a wooden board.

The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

No border, divider lines in various patterns.

Colours brown, cream, blue, pale blue, light brown, white, pink, gold and light green.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10.

Verse (unfinished) reads

'Our Father which art in heaven Hallowed

be thy Name thy Kingdom come Thy

Will be done in Earth As it is in Heaven give

us this day our daily bread and forgive us our

trespasses as we forgive them t'.

Signed and dated

'Marie Areton Aged Fourteen 1757'.

'1757' also stitched in two other places.

'ETON' above the signature.

Eton is a place in Windsor, Berkshire, now famous for its college.

CONDITION: Fair.

A few repairs to the lower section beneath the verse.

A number of stains.

Some stitch losses to the divider lines, signature and verse.

A number of loose threads throughout.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Unevenly stretched.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
