1868 Silkwork Verse Sampler by Emma Davies

Victorian, dated 1868. 16ins by 12.5ins wide. 1868 Silkwork Verse Sampler by Emma Davies. Framed in a 'molded composition over wood' frame with glass.

Brown taped to card with chipboard backing and brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground.

Diamonds border.

Colours dark green, green, pale blue, cream and silver.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-0.

Verse reads

'Go to the ant. thou sluggard. consider her

ways. and be wise. Which having no guide.

oversees. or ruler. Provideth her meat in the

summer. and gathereth her food in the har_

vest. How long wilt thou sleep. O sluggard

when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep. Who

can find a virtuous woman for her price is far

above rubies She stretcheth out her hand to

the poor yea she reachet forth her hands to

the needy she openeth her mouth with wis_

dom and in her tongue is the law of kindness she

looketh well to the ways of her household and

eateth not the bread of idleness Her children

arise up and call her blessed her husband also

and he praiseth her Favour is deceitful and

beauty is vain but a woman that feareth the

Lord she shall be praised Give her of the fruit

of her hands and let her own works praise her

Colours are slightly faded, making the pale colours difficult to read.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing very slight wear, otherwise sound and ready to hang.
