The sampler is worked in cotton and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.
No border, divider lines in various patterns.
Colours green, cream, light brown, copper, pink, purple, blue, peach and magenta.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-13.
Verse reads
'Virtue is the chiefest beauty
of the mind The noblest Orname
nt of Human kind Virtue s our S
afeguard and our guiding star
That stirs up Reason when our
Senses err'.
Signed and dated
'MARY ANN KNOWLESs Work 1825'.
A few motifs including birds, fir trees,
hearts, crowns,
diamonds and flowers.
CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes.
No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses.
Colours are faded.
