1799 Woolwork Sampler by Jane Oman

George III, dated June 30 1799. 16.5ins by 20.5ins wide. 1799 Woolwork Sampler by Jane Oman. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

The edges are tacked to a wooden board, with another wooden board as the backing.

The sampler is worked in wool on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral strawberry border.

Colours light brown, cream, pale blue, copper, pink, red and olive green.

Family initials.

Aphorism reads

'Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her c??? works praise her

in the gates Taught by Henzell Usher'.

Signed and dated

'A View of Solomons Temple June 30 1799 Done by Jane Oman in the ? year of her age'.

A good set of motifs, including Solomon's Temple,

Adam & Eve standing either side of the fruit laden tree of life, a snake coiled around its trunk,

birds, potted flowering plants, trees and fruit trees,

flowers

and fruit baskets.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

One hole in the top right corner.

A few old tack holes with rust staining around the edge.

Uniform age darkening of the ground.

Some stitch losses to the border, aphorism and motifs.

Colours are faded making some of them very difficult to read against the backing canvas.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
