1817 Silkwork Sampler by Amelia Bourne

George III, dated 1817. 15.75ins by 12.5ins wide. 1817 Silkwork Sampler by Amelia Bourne. Framed in a modern, gilt over wood, frame with glass. Stitched to black material edging and linen and stretched over chipboard.

Brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Floral borders.

Colours black, cream, gold, light green, pink and pale blue.

Family initials.

Verse reads

'Excel and emulate thy parents praise

Let thy ??? Worth the fabric raise

In evry useful art thy time employ

Zealous to gain esteem true heart-felt joy

Attain each grave that can adore thy mind

Blended with sentiment and taste refind

Neglect no duty and with graceful ease

Ever desire with modesty to please'.

Signed and dated

A good set of motifs, including fruit baskets

and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A few small holes.

Some very pale, patchy staining in the centre.

Stitch losses to the verse and signature.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Unevenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound and ready to hang.
