1847 Silkwork Sampler by Miss Margaret Fudge
Victorian, dated November 5th 1847. 19.25ins by 19.75ins wide. 1847 Silkwork Sampler by Miss Margaret Fudge. Framed in an old (re-stained) wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border.
Colours dark brown, blue, green, light brown, black, gold and olive green.
Verses read
'Beset with snares on every hand
In lifes uncertain Path I stand
Saviour devine diffuse thy light
To guide my doubtful footsteps
Right
Engage this roving treachrous heart
Betimes to choose the better Part
To scorn the trifles of a day
For joys that none can take away'.
Signed and dated

A wonderful set of finely embroidered motifs, including two churches, one flanked by tombs and trees,
the other flanked by trees with two ladies attending to the garden on one side, and a pond with swans and ducks on the other.

A lady standing by a fence, a small dog running towards her.
A child sat in a garden next to a water fountain.
A large bird perched on a flowering branch.
Birds, flowers, angels and insects.
CONDITION: Fair.
A number of tiny holes.
Losses of ground around the border (remaining pieces of the original work in these areas have been carefully glued to the backing cloth with conservator's glue).
No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses other than to the areas of loss around the border.
Colours are mostly good and strong. The silks bright and glossy.
Very slight colour run around the verse.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
