1811 Sampler by Mary Ann Dawson
George III, dated October 12th 1811. 21.5ins by 9.75ins wide. 1811 Sampler by Mary Ann Dawson. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass.

Stitched to paper with card backing.
The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.
Simple line border.
Colours green, blue, red, white, pink and olive green.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-17.
Verse reads
'Short is our longest day of life
And soon its prospect ends
Yet on that day's uncertain date
Eternity depends.
May I govern my passions with absolute sway
And grow wiser and better as life wears away.
If good we plant not vice will fill the place
And rankest weeds the richest soils deface.'.
One other verse is very difficult to read due to the pale silk colour.

'Mary Ann Dawton, Whitehaven, Octr 12th, 1811.'
Whitehaven is a place in Cumbria, England.
A few motifs including a flower,
potted flowering plant
and a fruit basket.
CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes.
One small, dark stain.
Uniform age darkening of the ground.
Some stitch losses to a few letters of the alphabet, divider lines and numbers.
Colours are faded making one of the verses very difficult to read.
No colour run.
Stretching is very slightly uneven.
Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
