1846 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Johnson

Victorian, dated July 31st 1846. 12ins by 13.5ins wide. 1846 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Johnson. Framed in an old, thick mahogany frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours green, dark brown, copper, gold and black.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-0.

Verses read

'Life is the time to serve the Lord,

The time to insure the great reward;

And while the lamp holds out to burn

The vilest sinner may return.

There are no acts of pardon past

In the cold grave to which we haste

But darkness death and long despair

Reign in eternal silence there.'.

'The loss of time is much

The loss of truth is more

The loss of Christ is such

No mortal can restore'.

Signed and dated

'Mary Ann Johnson July 31st 1846'.

A good set of motifs, including flowers,

bird houses,

a fruit basket

and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Generally good. A few tiny holes.

The ground is thinning in a couple of places around the verse.

One small, dark stain along the left edge.

Uniform age darkening of the ground.

Very minor stitch loss to the fruit basket.

Colours are slightly faded.

Very slight colour run around the green threads.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
