1796 Silkwork Sampler by Eleanor Still

George III, dated 1796. 16ins by 12.25ins wide. 1796 Silkwork Sampler by Eleanor Still. Framed in a gold painted frame with glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours copper, cream, blue, navy blue, pale blue, gold, black, light green, magenta, brown and dark green.

Verse reads

'LORD of the Harvest hear

Thy needy Servants Cry

Answer our Faith's effectual Prayer

And all our Wants supply

On Thee we humbly wait

Our Wants are in thy View

The Harvest truly Lord is great

The Labourers are few'.

Signed and dated

'Eleanor Still Anno Domini 1796'.

A good set of motifs, including a castle,

fleur d'lys,

lions,

stars,

a dog,

angels,

flowers,

a tree,

house,

milkmaid with two milk churns suspended from a yoke over her shoulders

and crowns.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A few small holes.

A number of patchy stains.

Minor stitch losses to the border and a few of the motifs.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
