1798 Silkwork Sampler by Sophia Ann Mease

George III, dated August 1798. 19ins by 13.25ins wide. 1798 Silkwork Sampler by Sophia Ann Mease. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering strawberry border along the top edge.

Colours gold, cream, green, pale blue, copper, pink, light green, magenta and dark brown.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-8.

Verses read

'IF YOU WOULD HAVE TRUE

HAPPINESS ATEND YOU ALL

YOUR DAYS SHUN THOU THE

PATHS OF WICKEDNESS AND

WALK IN WISDOM'S WAYS.'

'LET everlasting glories crown

Thy Head, my SAVIOUR and my Lord:

Thy hands have brought salvation down

And writ the blessings in his word.

What if we trace the Globe around,

And search from Britain to Japan,

There can be no Religion found

So just to God, so safe to man.

How well thy blessed truths agree:

How wise and holy thy commands:

Thy promises, how firm they be

How firm our hope and comfort stands

Should all the forms that man devise

Assault my faith with treachrous art

I'd call them vanity and lies.

A good set of motifs, including fruit baskets,

birds, potted flowering plants, fruit and fir trees,

and insects.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.

Staining around the edge.

Very minor stitch loss to the border.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
