George III, dated 1819. 24.25ins by 12.75ins wide. 1819 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Glaister. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk and fine wool on fine linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
No border.
Colours magenta, cream, blue, green, pale blue, light brown, copper, pink, light green, gold and black.
Verse reads
'Industry taught in early days
Not only gives the Teachers praise
But gives us pleasure when we view
The work that Innocence can do
The parents with exulting joy
Survey it as no Childish toy
But as prelude to each day
A greater genius will display
Go on dear Child to excell
Improve in work and Leading well
For Books and work do both contend
To make the Housewife and the friend
??? Child learn what ??? make God thy ???
For he at all times ??? ??? Fast Friend
??? all bad ways ??? ??? love truth and ???

A good set of motifs, some finely detailed, including a shepherdess sat under a tree, with two recumbent sheep by her side and a cottage in the background,
birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, fruit trees, fruit baskets,
crowns, a gazebo and lions.
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.
A few patchy stains.
Uniform age darkening of the ground.
Stitch losses to the verse.
The shepherdess motif is unfinished.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.
Unevenly stretched.
Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
