1805 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Hewitt

George III, dated December 15 1805. 19ins by 15ins wide. 1805 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Hewitt. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and glass.

Stitched to linen which is stretched over a piece of chipboard, with card backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours light green, cream, light brown, green, gold, white, black, brown and blue.

Verse reads

'And They Cut Abranch With One Cluster OF Grapes

And Bare It Upon AstFF And They BrouGht OF The

PoMeGranates In NuMbers ChaPter 13 Verse 23'.

Signed and dated

'Sarah HeWITT hir WorK Fininshed DeceMber 15 In 1805'.

Good set of finely detailed motifs, including Caleb and Joshua (the spies of Canaan),

angels, a bird,

potted flowering plants,

fruit trees, stags,

a recumbent deer,

sheep, trees

and flowers.

CONDITION: Generally good. No holes. No stains. No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.

Colour run around some of the black and green threads.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
