Pair Ackworth School Candler Sister Samplers

George III, dated 1804 and 1810. 13ins by 11ins wide. Pair Ackworth School Candler Sister Samplers.

Framed in old wood frames with gilt slips and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backings.

The samplers are worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and chain stitch.

Simple line oval borders.

Colour is black throughout.

The verse of the first sampler is titled 'ONE' and reads

'of the most illustrious, but at

the same Time one of the most dif-

ficult, of the Christian Duties, is, "To

love our Enemies," and to pray for the

Welfare and Amendment of them "who de-

spitefully use and persecute us." _ As therefore

Love and Charity towards all such are so repeat-

edly and strongly enjoined us by our blessed

Lord, we are under indispensable obligation

to comply with them;

and if we duly observe this precept, we shall soon

find the beneficial effects of it._'.

The verse of the second sampler is titled 'SOLITUDE' and reads

'is the hallowed ground which

religion hath, in every age, cho_

sen for her own. There, her inspiratio_

tion is felt, and her secret mysteries

elevate the soul. There, falls the tear of

contrition; there, rises towards heaven the

sigh of the heart; there, melts the soul

with all the tenderness of devotion, and

pours itself forth before him who

made, and him who redeemed it.'

Some interesting, original, handwritten family history included.

CONDITION: Good. Several holes to each, some repaired.

A few pale stain specks.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colour is good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frames in very good condition. Wire and hooks included for hanging.
