Large 1837 Silkwork Sampler by Jane Jennings
Victorian, dated 1837. 24.5ins by 24.5ins wide. Large 1837 Silkwork Sampler by Jane Jennings. Framed in an old, possibly original, mahogany frame with rippled, old glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.
The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours black, olive green, navy blue, dark brown, dark green and gold.
Verse entitled 'DESIRE' reads
'Be it my only wisdom here
To serve the Lord with filial fear
With loving gratitude
Superior sense may I display
By shunning every evil way
And walking in the good'.
Signed and dated
'Jane. Jennings. Aged. 10. Years. 1837'.
A wonderful set of motifs, including Solomons temple with a peacock perched at either end,
stars,
dogs,
birds,
angels,
butterflies,
crowns,
flowers,
fruit baskets,
fir trees,
a house with a garden and rabbits on the lawn,
beehives,
shells
and potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.
No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.
Very minor stitch loss to the letter T in Temple.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.
Slight colour run around the verse.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
