1844 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Edser

Victorian, dated August 20 1844. 19ins by 17.25ins wide. 1844 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Edser. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours dark green, red, light brown, gold, white, pink, orange, light green, grey and black.

Verse entitled 'WISDOM' reads

'To me thy better gifts impart

Each moral beauty of the heart

By studious thought refin'd,

nor wealth, the smiles of glad content

For pow'r, its amplest, best extent

An empire O'er my mind,

O send her sure her steady ray

To regulate my doubtful way

Through life's perplexing road

The mist of error to controul

And through this gloom direct my soul

To happiness and good'.

Signed and dated

'Elizabeth Edser August th 20 th 1844'.

A wonderful set of finely embroidered motifs, including a lady and a gentleman wearing contemporary dress,

flowers, crowns,

potted flowering plants,

trees,

birds,

butterflies

and a floral garland.

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes, one of which has been repaired.

A few pale stain specks.

Very minor stitch loss to the verse.

A couple of loose threads, one to the border and one to the tree motif.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition. Wire and hooks included for hanging.
