1831 Silkwork Sampler by Ann ?ambidges

William IV, dated November 12th 1831. 17.25ins by 17ins wide. 1831 Silkwork Sampler by Ann ?ambidges. Framed in an old, wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches, some very fine.

Meandering floral border.

Colours olive green, cream, light brown, gold and dark brown.

Verse reads

'To you

my dear friend,

this work, I present,

and hope it will please

you, and give you content

and I'll, through my Life,

use my utmost endeavours;

to please you, and merit,

your further kind, favours.'.

Signed and dated

'Ann ?ambidges Work Novr 12th 1831'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a fence either side, butterflies/bees,

birds, flowers,

a fruit basket,

fruit trees,

ducks,

potted flowering plants

and crowns.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.

Loss of ground along the top and bottom edge.

No stains other than patchy uniform age darkening of the ground.

Stitch losses to the verse and signature.

Colours are all good and strong. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition. Wire and hooks included for hanging.
