1840 Sampler by Emma Cooper

Victorian, dated 1840. 13.5ins by 12.5ins wide. 1840 Sampler by Emma Cooper. Framed in a 20thC black frame with glass.

Loose mounted to card.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours dark green, light brown, dark brown, gold, light green, white and cream. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-9.

Verse reads,

'In all my vast concerns with thee,

In vain my soul would try

To shun thy presence. Lord, or flee

The notice of thine eye.

Thy all surrounding sight surveys

My rising and my rest;

My public walks,my private ways,

And secrets of my breast.'.

Signed and dated 'Emma Cooper Aged 9 Years 1840'.

A good set of motifs, including birds perched on flower baskets,

fir trees,

hearts

and potted flowering plants

CONDITION: Good. A few holes.

 

  

One small mark, not detracting.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Unevenly stretched due to loose mounting.

  

Frame showing wear, otherwise sound.
