Circa 1840 Sampler by Amelia Norman
Victorian, dated Circa 1840. 14.25ins by 11.75ins wide. Circa 1840 Sampler by Amelia Norman. Framed in an old, possibly original wood frame with gilt slip and old rippled glass.

Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with paper dust cover.
The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Decorated zig zag border.
Colours Dark green, light brown, black, gold and blue.
Verse reads,
'What is life tis but a vapour
Soon it vanishes a way
Life is like a dying taper
O my soul why wish to stay.lly
Why not spread thy wings and
Straight to yonder world of joy'.
Signed and dated 'Amelia. Norman Born. August the. 20 1834'.
A good set of motifs, including a temple,
birds,
flowers,
potted flowering plants,
stags,
fruit baskets,
deer,
cross,
crowns,
peacock,
goblet,
spade,
a key and a butterfly
CONDITION: Good. No holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses. Some colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run.
Stretching is very slightly uneven.
Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
