1799 York Map Sampler by Maria Birchall
George III, dated 1799. 16.5ins by 20ins wide. 1799 York Map Sampler by Maria Birchall. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.
The sampler is very finely worked in silk on fine linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
The border is stitched with numbers representing degrees of latitude and longitude.
Colours black, blue, pale blue, gold, light green, red, olive green and pink.
Reads
'YORKSHIRE is much the largest County
in England and being above 80 miles in length
and about 70 miles in breadth and 350
miles in circumference'.
Signed and dated
'A MAP OF THE County of York. worked by MARIA BIRCHELL at TOTTENHAM 1799'.

Depicts a map of York with towns, rivers and historic buildings.
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes, particularly in the centre along the fold lines.
A number of minor stains.
Stitch losses to the black lettering, the original underlying ink remains in places.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition.
