MOVE TO:
1821 Sampler by Fanny Plumbe
George IV, dated 1821. 13ins square. 1821 Sampler by Fanny Plumbe.
Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wooden frame with rippled, old glass.
Tacked onto a wooden mounting frame and cardboard backing.
Worked in cross stitch throughout.
Verse/s read "The spacious firmament on high, with all the blue ethereal sky, And spangled heav'ns, a shining frame, Their great original proclaims, The unvearied sun, from day to day, Does his Creator's power display, And publishes to ev'ry land. The work of an Almighty hand."
and a verse entitled "Gratitude for a Christian Education", reads "While many of our race, Are left to go astray, Far from the blisful paths of peace, Nor ever hear the way, How happy is our lot, Who live on Britains Isle! Which is of Heaven the favour'd spot, Where countles blessings smile. The God whom we adore, Fills Earth and air and skies, Surveys the whole Creation o're, And all our thoughts espires. Since British children are, So highly bles'd of Heaven, Then it should be their constant care, To prize the mercies given".(definitely something of a patriot!!!)
Signed and dated "Fanny Plumbe May 6th 1821".
The signature is unclear due to stitch loss, but this is correct as far as I can tell.
Meandering, floral strawberry border.
The sampler is worked in fine silk threads throughout.
Green, copper, gold, silver, black and pink colour threads used.
Motifs of flower baskets, overflowing with blossoms
CONDTION: Very distressed. A number of small holes less than 0.25 inches in size. The holes are located in the top left hand corner,
bottom middle ,
middle right hand side
bottom right hand corner top left hand side
and the top right hand border of the sampler, all illustrated.
Extensive uniform, staining throughout.
A few stitch losses to the signature and verses, illustrated.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
No colour run. No stretching.
The frame is worn and is coming apart in one or more of the corners, illustrated,
but is still sturdy.
