1801 Silkwork Sampler by Lucy Pickford

George III, dated 1801. 13ins by 16.75ins. Unframed sampler mounted onto a wooden backing with tacks.

There are two verses. The first entitled 'On CHRIST our Life' reads 'I am the Resurrection, faith the Lord, Eternal Life's the Fruit of my eternal Word, Whoever firmly does on me believe, The Grave shall not confine, nor Hell receive: Nor only this, but those, that will rely, On what I teach, shall never never die'.

The second verse entitled 'RELIGION' reads 'Religion prompts us to a future State, The last Appeal from fortune and from Fate, Where GOD all righteous Way will be declar'd, The Pad meet Punishment, the Good Reward'.

Note, the 's' look a lot like f's in this early script.

Signed and dated 'Lucy Pickford February 1801'.

Meandering strawberry border and divider lines.

Stitched in fine silks throughout.

Pink, green, gold, black, silver, beige and copper colours used.

Very finely stitched motifs of birds perched on trees and flowers, baskets and flowers.
