Victorian, circa 1880. 19ins by 16ins. Victorian Motif Sampler by Margaret Paul.
Framed in an old, possibly original, wooden frame with rippled, old glass.
Loose mounted onto a cardboard backing .
The sampler has family initials along the top.
Signed "Margaret S Paul Agd 12 Yrs".
Meandering, floral strawberry border.
The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout.
Red, blue, yellow, green, light brown, dark brown, black, orange, pink and grey colour threads used.
Motifs include potted flowering plants, dogs, flowers, the head of a dog holding a stick,
a lady sitting in her garden with a watering can,
a heart, a variety of distinct species of birds including a duck, a cockeral, a parrot and a peacock, and stags.
CONDTION: Slightly distressed.
No holes. A few slight patchy stains, greater than 3 inches in size, in the bottom left hand side, the top right hand side and the middle right hand side, all illustrated. No stitch losses.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading.
No colour run. No stretching.
The frame has some chipping, particularly along the bottom, illustrated,
but is structurally sound.
