Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler
 

MOVE TO:

1836 Silkwork sampler by Sarah Ann Locke

William IV, dated 1836. 16ins by 12ins. Mounted into an old, glazed wooden frame. Tacked onto a wooden backing.

The verse in the centre reads 'Oh Father now for Jesus sake, A Helpless child be pleas'd to take, Beneath thy wings to hide, A Dangerous path I have to tread, Where snares abound on ev'ry hand, Oh Deign to be my guide. And when an angry world doth frown, And when the snares of youth I'y flown, And done with all but thee, my weary head then may I rest, upon my saviours peaceful breast, To all Eternity.'

Signed and dated 'Sarah Ann Locke KENDAL January 27 1836'.

Stitched in fine silk threads.

Pink, greens, silver, gold, blue and black colours.

Wonderful border of finely detailed flowers.

CONDITION: Uniform darkening of backing canvas.

No patchy stains. Two small blue stains in the bottom border, illustrated.

Two minor 5mm holes around the bottom border, illustrated.

No stitch losses. Colours are a little faded, but still clear.

Slight colour run to the black in the verse. No stretching.

Frame has some scratching and the paper to the reverse is ripped. The sampler could be hung as it is.
