Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

George IV, dated 1821. 13ins by 12.5ins. 1821 silkwork verse sampler by Elizabeth M. Knight.

Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wooden frame with glass.

Tacked onto a wooden mounting frame and cardboard backing .

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-9.

Worked in cross stitch throughout. Verse/s read "Jesus, Permit thy gracious Name to stand, As the first effort of an Infant's hand, And while her fingers o'er the Canvass move, Engage her tender Heart, to seek thy Love, With thy dear Children may she share a part: And write thy Name: Thyself upon her Heart." and "Religions Path enamel'd shines, With most delightful Flow'rs; Happy the Youth whom Grace inclines, To tread the sacred Bow'rs.".

Signed and dated "Elizabeth.M.Knight".

Place name Lyme Regis Dorset is mentioned, a wonderful town in the South West of England.

Meandering leafy border.

The sampler is worked in fine silk threads throughout.

Green, pale green and black colour threads used.

Motifs of fruit baskets.

CONDTION: Slightly distressed. A few holes less than 0.25 inches in size. The holes are located in the bottom middle,

top middle

and the bottom left hand corner of the sampler, all illustrated.

The holes are barely visible, blending into the backing colour.

No stains. No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading.

The silks still have their original bright glossy sheen.

Very slight colour run to the green colour threads in the top right hand corner, illustrated, barely noticable.

No stretching. The frame has some wear, illustrated, but is structurally sound.
