Victorian, dated 1898. 16ins square. 1898 Silkwork Sampler by Helena Cumberland.
Framed in a modern, gold coloured wooden frame with glass. Loose mounted onto a wooden backing.
The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-0.
Short epigram reads 'God love th ever tho'all else decays away, And those we love & trust should turn His tender watchful care andures for aye'.
Signed and dated "Helena Cumberland Aged 11 years 1898 All Saints Girls School".
Zig zag border.
The sampler is worked in silk threads throughout.
Pink, red, dark brown, gold, silver, purple, yellow and blue colour threads used.
A scattering of motifs, including potted flowering plants,
birds (owls) and a geometric star-like pattern.
CONDTION: Good.
No holes. Uniform slight darkening of the backing canvas.
I believe the dark wooden backing contributes a great deal to the darkening.
One 0.5ins stain in the top left hand side, illustrated.
No stitch losses.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. No colour run. No stretching.
The frame is in very good condition and the sampler is ready to hang.
