1844 pictorial Sampler by Esther Hallworth

verse 'Though riches to others be given Their corn and their vintage abound Yet I have a treasure in heaven There should my affections be found Why stoop for the glittering sands Which they are so eager to share Forgetting those wealthier lands That form my inheritance there',

 

signed 'ESTHER HALLWORTHS WORK Aged 9 year 1844'.

 

Stitched in wool and thread. Colors pink, white, dark green, light green, blue, brown, black and beige.

 

The central picture of a girl and a goat in a rural landscape. Stitched to a linen backing and stretched and tacked to a mahogany stretcher frame. No frame or glass.

Overall darkening of the linen ground and the wools from age and dirt. Slightly darker ground around the goat and in the top right hand corner.

 

No fading noticeable. 11 holes, the largest between the lines of the verse, some with attempts at repair,

 

plus four tears near the bottom border and one to the extreme bottom right of the picture, from stretching, one repaired.

 

5 stitch losses to the border. Very slight color run from the dark brown thread.
