Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

Victorian, dated 1846. 23ins by 24ins. 1846 Verse&Motif Sampler by Jane Grozier's.

Framed in a modern wooden frame with no glass. Stitched onto chipboard backing .

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-32.

Verse reads 'Tis education forms the youthful mind, Just as the twig is bent the tree inclined, Let modesty and grace be still your guide, And keep you clear from ignorance and pride. Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand, as the first efforts of an infants hand, And whilst her fingers oer the canvas move, Engage her tender heart to seek thy love, With thy dear children may she have a part, And write thy name thy self upon her heart.'.

Signed and dated "Jane Gozier's Work 1846".

Meandering strawberry border.

The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout.

Orange, red, yellow, green, dark brown, magenta, navy blue and pink colour threads used.

Motifs include sailing ships,

birds,

flowers, fruit baskets,

hearts, crowns, lions, a multi coloured stag,

geometric shapes

and potted flowering plants.

CONDTION: Good.

One hole less than 0.125 inches in size.

The hole is located in the middle left hand side .

No stains. A couple of stitch losses to letters of the alphabets, illustrated.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Some stretching, worst illustrated.

The frame has some wear, illustrated,

but is structurally sound.
