Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

Possibly Scottish Victorian Sampler by GAM

Victorian Sampler by GAM. Victorian, circa 1880. 8ins by 18ins. Loose and unframed. The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase, numbers 1-10 and family initials AM GM EM MK.

 

Worked in cross stitch throughout. Signed with elaborte initials GAM in centre and again at the bottom GM, dated I think "June 24 18" then she ran out of space!

 

Simple diamonds border. The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout. Pale blue, yellow, light brown, black, pink, orange, magenta, green and red colour threads used. A few motifs including thistles, birds, fruit baskets, crown, flowers and stags.

 

CONDTION: Good. No holes. No stains. A few stitch losses to letters of the alphabets and numbers and the signature.

 

Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. No colour run. No stretching.
