Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler
 

MOVE TO:

1835 Verse Sampler by Emily Gething

William IV, dated 1835. 12ins by 15.5ins. Mounted into a modern maple veneer wooden frame with gilt borders. Glass cover. The sampler appears to be loose mounted onto a card backing, held in a slip.

Alphabets and numbers at the top and a long verse which reads 'GREAT bounteous Author of the day. Oh deign to hear my pray'r. Illume my mind with wisdoms ray. And bless me by thy care. Teach me Oh gracious Lord to know. The paths of good and ill. And as the stream of life shall flow. Each day to learn thy will.'

Signed and dated 'Emily Gething Her Work Aged 8 Years July 6 1835'.

Meandering strawberry floral border.

Stitched in a fine cotton-like thread throughout.

Red, pink, green, brown, cyan colors. Floral motifs.

CONDITION: Good. No holes, no stains. Stitch loss to the verse and to the divider lines, illustrated.

Colours are good and strong. No colour run. The modern frame is in very good condition.
