MOVE TO:
1737 Band Sampler by Dame Isabella Fairlame.
George II, dated 1737. 8.5ins by 15.5ins. 1737 Band Sampler. Unframed with no glass. Loose no backing .

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lowercase, numbers 1-13 and many family initials.

Worked in a variety of stitches including algerian eye.
Verse/s read 'Anne Hiot ….. Dame Isabella Fairlame scholar. No dangrous Fruit. NO tempting Eve no crafty Serpent to decieve, But we like gods mead Shall be, OH Let me dye that life to see.'.
The verse is very difficult to decipher because the old script.
Signed and dated "isable fairtam 1749 ended was born on Friday the 30 of Septembr in year of lord God 1737".

Divider lines in a number of patterns and stitches.

The sampler is worked in fine silk threads throughout.

Red, blue, yellow, dark brown, silver, purple, pink and green colour threads used.
Unusual, interesting set of motifs include a sailing ship,

a brown skinned man smoking a pipe,

a lady carrying paniers across her shoulders,

a woman wearing a crown, lions,
Adam & a dark skinned Eve standing either side of a tree, the letters 'A' and 'e' next to them,

birds, hearts, crowns, flowers and dogs.
CONDTION: Good.
Tiny holes around the extreme edges from tacks of a previous mounting.

The tacks have left small rust stains on the canvas.
No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
The original splendour of the sampler can be seen on the reverse, which has been unexposed to the elements, probably since the samplers creation.

No colour run. No stretching.
The very bottom of the sampler has rotted away slightly probably from slight dampness getting to this edge of the sampler, illustrated.
