Victorian, dated 1851. 15ins square. 1851 English sampler by Lucy Dunn.
Framed in an old, possibly original, wooden frame with glass.
Glued onto chipboard backing.
Worked in cross stitch throughout.
Verse/s read 'How short is life how swift death, Our days alas how few, This mortal life is but A breath, Tis like the morning dew'.
Signed and dated "Louy Dunn Aged 13 June 29 1851".
Meandering, floral strawberry border.
The sampler is worked in fine wool threads throughout.
White, pink, purple, light green, orange, red and navy blue colour threads used.
Motifs include flowering trees,
birds holding hearts in their beaks,
birds that look like storks,
fruit baskets, baskets,
strawberrys,
hearts, potted flowering plants and dogs.
CONDTION: Distressed. No holes whatsoever.
Extensive patchy stains around the edges, illustrated.
A few stitch losses to the verse and motifs, illustrated.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
No colour run. No stretching.
The frame is in very good condition.
