MOVE TO:
Sampler by Catherine Smith circa 1833
Sampler by Catherine Smith circa 1833. William IV, circa 1833. 12.5ins by 10ins. Unframed with no glass. Stitched onto linen backing.

Signed with initials "C.S". These initials are for Catherine Smith who was aged 12 in 1833. We know this for certain as we purchased a group of samplers together, all bearing the initials C.S and one having the signature 'Catherine Smith Aged 12 August 31 1833.' Meandering strawberry border. The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout. Red, blue, dark brown, purple, green and yellow colour threads used. A scattering of motifs, including birds, flowers, a crown, potted flowering plants and stags.

CONDTION: Slightly distressed. No holes. A large pale circular yellow stain to the centre of the sampler, illustrated. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. No colour run. No stretching.
