Verse Sampler by Catherine Smith c.1833
Verse Sampler by Catherine Smith c.1833. William IV, circa 1833. 12.5ins by 17.5ins. Unframed with no glass. Stitched onto linen backing.

Verse reads 'For ever here my rest shall be, Close to thy bleeding side, This all my hope and all my plea, For me the Saviour died. My dying Saviour and my God, Fountain for guilt an sin,

sprinkle me ever with thy blood, And cleanse and keep me clean.'. Signed with initials "C.S". These initials are for Catherine Smith who was aged 12 in 1833. We know this for certain as we purchased a group of samplers together, all bearing the initials C.S and one having the signature 'Catherine Smith Aged 12 August 31 1833.'

Meandering leafy border.

The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout. Brown, red, green, pink, magenta, pale blue and yellow colour threads used. A scattering of motifs, including fruit baskets and a funeral urn. CONDTION: Good. No holes. Few, very small pale stain specks.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. No colour run. No stretching.
