c.1833 Verse Sampler by Catherine Smith. William IV, circa 1833. 10.25ins by 13ins. Unframed with no glass. Verse reads 'Believing on my Lord I find, A sure and present aid, On thee alone my constant, Mind be every moment stay'd'.

Stitched onto linen backing.

Signed with initials "C S ". These initials are for Catherine Smith who was aged 12 in 1833. We know this for certain as we purchased a group of samplers together, all bearing the initials C S and one having the signature 'Catherine Smith Aged 12 August 31 1833.'

Meandering strawberry border. The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout. Brown, blue, green, pink, purple, red and yellow colour threads used. A set of typical sampler motifs, including a fruit basket, hearts, birds and flowers.


CONDTION: Good. No holes. Uniform yellowing of the backing canvas. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. No colour run. No stretching.
