Motif Sampler by Catherine Smith c.1833. William IV, circa 1833. 8.25ins by 9.75ins. Unframed with no glass. Stitched onto linen backing.

Signed with initials "C.S". These initials are for Catherine Smith who was aged 12 in 1833. We know this for certain as we purchased a group of samplers together, all bearing the initials C S and one having the signature 'Catherine Smith Aged 12 August 31 1833.'

Greek key border. The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout. Red, green, light brown, pink, blue and yellow colour threads used. Large central motif of a flowering plant with birds either side.

 

CONDTION: Very Good. No holes. No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. No colour run. No stretching.
