1794 Verse Sampler by Ann Crofts
George III, dated 1794. 13.1ins by 14ins. 1794 Sampler by Ann Crofts.
Mounted into a modern pine frame with frosted glass.
I believe this is stitched onto an acid free card backing.
Alphabets and numbers along the top.
A long verse, entitled 'On Providence.' reads, 'God's Hand how wide it spreads the Sky, How glorious to behold. Ting'd with a blue of heavenly dye, And starr'd like sparkling Gold. There he has bid the globes of light, Their endless Circles run: There the pale Planet rules the night, And Day obeys the Sun. On thin Air without Prop, Hang fruitful Showers around; At his Command they sink, and drop, Their fatness on the ground.
How did his wondrous Skill array, Yon Fields in charming green; A thousand Herbs his Art display, A thousand Flowers between. His Glories shine all Nature round, And strike the gazing Sight, Thro' Skies and Seas, and solid Ground, With Terror and Delight. Infinite Strength and equal Skill, Shine thro' the Worlds abroad, Our Souls with vast Amazement fill, And speak the Maker GOD.'.
Signed and dated 'Ann Crofts aged Eight Years. 1794.'.
Meandering strawberry border.
Stitched in fine silks throughout. Pink, black, green, silver, gold, copper, blue, red and purple colours.
Motifs perched on the bottom border, of baskets,
a geometric pattern
and a bird perched in a small tree holding something in its beak.
CONDTION: Two 5mm holes in the left hand verse, illustrated,
a few smaller holes above 'Crofts', illustrated.
The holes are barely visible with the good backing. There are also some freys and 'bites' around the edge of the sampler, outside the border, from a previous mounting, worst illustrated.
No stains, no stitch losses. Colours are good, strong and shiney. No colour run and no stretching. The frame is in very good condition and the sampler is ready to hang.
