MOVE TO:
1790 Silkwork sampler by Elizabeth Birch
George III, dated 1790. 12.75ins by 14.5ins. Mounted into an old, ebonised wooden frame with gold borders. Old glass cover.
The sampler is tacked to a wooden backing.
The verse reads, 'As to be perfectly just is an attribute of the divine nature; to be to to the utmost of our abilities, is the Glory of man.'
Signed and dated 'Elizabeth Birch her work ended in the 12th Year Of her age April the 16th 1790.'
Border of X's enclosed in parrallel zig zags.
Stitched in fine silks throughout.
Pink, cyan, gold, silver, copper, green and black colours.
Fine set of detailed motifs including winged angels blowing trumpets,
flowering plants with birds and squirrels pirched in them, fir trees, dogs, stags, a shepherd and sheperdess,
parrots,
a fruit basket,
crowns, potted flowering plants,
roses amongst others.
CONDITION: Good. A few small holes around the border, illustrated,
in the mid left, illustrated,
in the mid right, illustrated
in the top middle, illustrated in the bottom left and bottom right, illustrated.
Some very slight patchy staining in the top half, illustrated in pics above.
No stitch losses. Colours are good and strong.
Very slight colour run to the black, illustrated.
No stretching. The frame has some wear and paint flaking, but is structurally sound.
