MOVE TO:
1840 motif Sampler by Frances Binder
Victorian, dated 1840. 20.5ins by 21.5ins. Mounted into an old wooden frame with glass. I believe this has been tacked onto a wooden backing, but I cannot tell without removing the piece from the frame.
There is a verse in three parts, in the corners, 'My Dear Friends will, Bless And Praise For, Giving Me Learning, In My Early Days'
and 'Youth Builds For age, Age builds for Rest, Those that Build for Heaven build the best'
and 'When Conscience Plead Turn not away, Tis Heaven That speak And Points the Way'.
Signed and dated 'Frances Binder Finished this work January 31 1840 In Her 11 Year'.
Meandering strawberry border.
Stitched in wool throughout. Red, green, white, orange, brown, blue, yellow colours. Interesting motifs: Jesus on the cross, flanked by two standing angels and two flying angels.
Two other people on crucifix's.
Windmills, flowers,
birds, fruit baskets,
a field with sheep
and Adam and Eve next to the fruiting tree of life, a snake coiled around it's trunk.
CONDITION: No holes. Heavy staining in the top left hand quarter of the sampler, works its way across the top, illustrated in pics above.
Stitch losses to the border, worst illustrated.
Colours are good and strong. No colour run, no stretching. The frame is in good condition with only slight wear.
