Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

Early Victorian, dated 1838. 23.5ins by 24ins. 1838 Sampler by Betsey Stopforth.

Please note, for some reason the pictures of this sampler give the backing canvas a strange red tinge. The actual backing canvas colour is illustrated in the small photo below:

Framed in an old, possibly original, wooden frame with no glass. Tacked onto a wooden mounting frame and linen backing.

Verse/s read 'Bestow dear Lord upon our youth, The gift of early grace, And let the seed of sacred truth, Fall in a fruitful place, Grace is a plant whereer it grows, Of pure and heavenly root, But fairest in the youngest shows, And yields the sweetest fruit, Ye carcless ones o hear betimes, The voice of sovereign love, Your youth is stain d with many crimes, But mercy reigns above, True you are young but there s a stone, Within the youngest breast, Or half the crimes which you have done, Would rob you of your rest, For you the public prayer is made, Oh join the public prayer, For you the secret tear is shed, Oh shed yourselves a tear, We pray that you may early prove, The spirit s power to teach, You cannot be too young to love, That Jesus whom we preach'.

Signed and dated "Betsy Stopforth s Work Aged 11 Years 1838".

Meandering, floral strawberry border.

The sampler is worked in silk threads throughout.

Gold, copper, black, green and silver colour threads used.

Motifs run down either side of the verse and include potted flowering plants,

blossoming trees,

trees, laden with fruit and birds.

Motifs at the top of butterflies.

CONDTION: Slightly distressed.

No holes. A few rust stains around the extreme edges from the mounting tacks, worst illustrated.

No stitch losses.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

Colour run to the black coloured threads, worst illustrated.

No stretching.

The frame has some wear, illustrated, but is structurally sound.
