Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

MOVE TO:

1855 sampler by Ann Smith.

Victorian, dated 1855. 9ins by 15.5ins. 1855 sampler by Ann Smith.

Framed in an old, possibly original, wooden frame with glass. Glued around the very edges, onto cardboard backing. The glue is only present on the reverse of the sampler, tucked behind the card backing. The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-10.

Signed and dated "Ann Smith Aged 9 years 1855 fosdyke".

Place name Fosdyke is mentioned. This is a small town in Lincolnshire, North East of England.

Cross linked chain border.

The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout.

Blue, red, green, light brown, pink, white and yellow colour threads used.

Motifs include swans,

flowers, potted flowering plants, fir trees, hearts, birds

fruit baskets

and butterflies.

CONDTION: Slightly distressed.

No holes whatsoever.

A few dark stains from mounting tacks, illustrated, less than 0.25 inches in size.

No stitch losses.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run. No stretching.

Frame has very slight wear, not detracting, illustrated, is otherwise sound and in my opinion ready to hang.

The sampler needs remounting into the frame
