1836 Silkwork Sampler by Martha Walker
William IV, dated May 14th 1836. 10.75ins by 9.25ins wide. Framed in an old wood frame with glass.
Stitched to linen with pink satin edging, and mounted onto card with a wooden dust cover.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye.
Zig zag border inside a meandering floral border.
Colour is copper throughout. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-13.
A Verse entitled 'Early Piety.' reads
'Oh! thou Supreme, to whom I prostrate bend,
My God, my Guide, Creator, Father, Friend!
Give to my youthful mind that spark divine
Which seeks thy will alone to make it mine;
Oh! keep each passing hour from error free,
And make it point the path which leads to thee.'.
Signed and dated
'Martha Walker, May 14th 1836.'.
A few motifs including flowers, stars and potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.
One stain speck, and slight uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colour is all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing some wear and a chip, but structurally sound and could be hung as is.
