1826 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Rogers
George IV, dated December 15th 1826. 15ins by 12.5ins wide. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with glass.
Fixed (probably stitched) to linen with wooden dust cover.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours dark green, cream, blue, light brown, gold, pale purple, copper and pale blue.
Alphabets A-Z in uppercase with numbers 1-7.
Verse reads
'Learn now your Young .to Know
the Lord . Strive for to Seek him in his Holy word
Do this and Happy you may be On Earth and
to Eternity'.
Signed and dated
'Mary Rogers Her work Aged 11 Years December 15th . 1826'.
A good set of motifs, including birds, dogs, hearts, diamonds, crowns, flowers and potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.
Light staining along the central fold lines.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.
Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound and ready to hang.
