1826 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Shepherd
George IV, dated 1826. 16.5ins by 11.5ins wide. Framed in a gilt over wood, frame with gilt slip and glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral and leafy border.
Colours black, blue, dark brown, light green, dark green and gold.
Verse entitled 'The Rose of Sharon' reads
'Of all the flow' rs beneath the sun
There's none attracts me like the rose
This lovely flower when almost faint
Has oftentimes my heart compos'd
Now if you wish to see this rose
Blooming in all its beauty s fair
Open in crimson colour sweet
To calvary cross you see it their
This lovely rose of sharon fair
The traveller plucks it on his way
Fragrent makes its Journey sweet
Just as a shadow past a way'.
Signed and dated
'Mary Ann Shepherd April th' 4 1826'.
A good set of motifs, including flowers, dogs, hearts, crowns, birds and
potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.
A few patchy stains on the right hand side, and uniform age darkening of the ground.
Stitch losses to the holed areas, the verse, and the motifs.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame in good condition.
