Circa 1800 Silkwork Sampler by Ann Maria Phipps

George III, circa 1800. 12.5ins by 12.25ins wide. Professionally framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with rippled, old glass.

Stitched to linen over card with chipboard and brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours gold, blue, green, pale blue, olive green, copper, black, magenta, white and light green.

Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-18.

Aphorism reads

'Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman that feareth the Lord she

shall be praised'.

A good set of motifs, including a shepherd and shepherdess standing either side of a tree,

crowns,

fruit baskets, a flower

and birds.

CONDITION: Generally Fair. A number of holes, worst illustrated.

A number of stains, illustrated.

Some stitch losses to holed areas, divider lines and flower motif, worst illustrated.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame has a reglued crack to the bottom, illustrated, otherwise sound and ready to hang.
