1831 Silkwork Sampler By Hannah Reston Lockington
William IV, dated 1831. 21ins by 18ins wide. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours black, cream, blue, yellow, green, light brown, pink, copper and olive green.
Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-10.
Verse reads
'Be it my only wisdom here.
To serve the Lord with filial fear,
With loving gratitude:
Superior sense may I display,
By shunning every evil way.
And walking in the good.
O may I still from sin depart!
A wise and understanding heart,
Jesus to me be given!
And let me thro' thy Spirit know,
To glorify my God below,
And find my way to heaven
From all that dwell below the skies,
Let the Creator's praise arise:
Let the ???? name be sung,
Through every land by every tongue.
Eternal are thy mercies Lord:
Eternal truth attendt thy word:
Thy praise that ???? from shore to shore,
Till suns shall rise and set no more.'.

CONDITION: Generally Fair. A number of holes.
A number of patchy stains, and uniform age darkening of the ground.
Stitch losses to the holed areas and verse.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame in very good condition.
