1808 Silkwork Sampler by Frances Burnyeat
George III, dated 1808. 12.25ins by 7.75ins wide. Framed in a 'plastic over wood' frame with glass.
Loose mounted onto card with brown paper dust cover.
The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Simple line border.
Colours copper, cream, green, pink, white and black. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-9.
Verse reads
'In Looking over this
If faults you spy
Think you once was
Young as well as I'.
Signed and dated
'Frances Burnyeat Her Work 1808'.
A few motifs including a potted flowering plant, birds,
a heart,
flowers
and dogs.
CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes.
Slight staining to centre where sampler has been previously folded, illustrated.
Minor stitch losses to lower case letters of the alphabet, illustrated.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. Pale colours difficult to read. No colour run.
Unevenly stretched, illustrated.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
