1844 Woolwork Sampler by Agusta Hope

Victorian, dated 1844. 16.5ins by 16.5ins wide. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in wool on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours light green, grey, pale blue, black, green, pink, blue and magenta.

Verse reads

'Fix d on this ground will I remain

Though my heart fail and flesh decay

This anchor shall my soul sustain

When earth s foundation melt away'.

Signed and dated

'Agusta Hope s Work 1844'.

A good set of motifs, including a lady standing in the centre surrounded by birds,

squirrels,

fir trees, flowers and dogs.

CONDITION: Generally Fair. A number of holes, some repaired, worst illustrated.

Staining to centre and uniform age darkening of the ground, worst illustrated.

Some stitch losses to holed areas and border around signature, worst illustrated.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing wear and chips, worst illustrated, but structurally sound.
