1784 Band Sampler by Elenor Symons

George III, dated 1784. 25.5ins by 7.5ins wide. Framed in a wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk and fine wool on canvas ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye.

Simple line border.

Colours olive green, blue, green, pale blue, copper, gold, brown and cream.

Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and numbers 1-6.

Aphorism reads

'WHEN LAND IS

GONE AND MONEY

IS SPENT THEN

LARNING IS MOST

EXCELLENT JUNE

THE 17 1784'.

Signed and dated

'Elenor Symons Finished This July The 16 1784'.

Motifs include two men,

 

an angel,

birds,

hearts,

flowers

 

and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Good. Two holes.

One small dark stain.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Pale colours difficult to read. No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition.
