Circa 1830 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Sizmur

Circa 1830. 12.75ins by 12ins wide. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass and metal hanging hook to reverse. Fixed to board dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Floral border.

Colours olive green, dark green, cream, pale blue, pink, mauve, dark brown and light brown.

Verse reads

'AH few and full of sorrows are the days

Of miserable man, his life decays

Like that frail flowr which with the suns uprise

Her bud unfolds and with the evening dies

He like an empty shadow slides away

And all his life is but a winters day'.

Signed and dated

'Mary Sizmur 18' (date unfinished or possibly unstitched).

A good set of motifs, including crowns, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets,

flowers,

a tree,

a fruit tree and two squirrels eating fruit.

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes, illustrated.

Some larger repaired holes, worst illustrated.

A few pale stain specks, worst illustrated.

Minor stitch losses to the verse and to some of the holed areas, worst illustrated.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.

Very slight colour run around the olive green threads, worst illustrated.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing wear and chips, worst illustrated, but structurally sound and ready to hang.
